Several years ago, I retired from my job as Market Development Director for a printing equipment
company in Birmingham. At that time, I was living in a small lakefront home in Lincoln. Soon
after this, my wife and I decided that we wanted a larger house with some land. We ended up
moving a few miles away and put a home on a 5 acre lot.
We got things settled in the house and then started to work on the landscaping. I quickly realized
that I was going to need a tractor to help me clear some of the land and build a garden. I went
to my local new tractor retailer to look at their tractors and I was shocked at how much they cost.
I did not want to spend $15-$20 thousand dollars on a small tractor just to use it on a 5 acre lot.
I looked into less expensive options and I started to learn a lot about used tractors. I ended up
buying a used 20 hp tractor with a box blade and a dirt scoop. This tractor was exactly what I needed
and I got it for 1/3 the cost of a new one. This tractor could do everything I wanted and it was a
tremendous aid in helping me finish my landscaping and garden. I ended up selling it a couple of years
later for almost exactly what I paid for it.
Now that I had my home, garden and landscaping finished, I started to look for something to do with
my time. I thought about how much that tractor helped me and I knew there were many people that were
in the same position that I was. They needed something to help them with there land but did not want
to spend the money on a brand new tractor. Therefore, I decided to start selling used small tractors
as a hobby and try to earn a few dollars in the process. (This was important since the stock market
crash put a small dent in my 401k)
When I worked as Market Development Director, one of my main responsibilities was to find quality
used equipment for our company to sell. We imported lots of equipment from overseas and I developed
lots of experience in judging the quality of the used equipment. I knew that if the equipment was
not in superior condition, my customers did not want it and neither did I. This experience has helped
me immensely in working with used tractors. I can tell when the tractor is in good condition and when
it has only been touched up to look like it is in good condition.
While this started out as a hobby, it has now turned into a small business. I spend most of my time
dealing with customers or hunting deal quality used tractors to sell. I absolutely love what I am
doing and enjoy meeting people and discussing small tractors with them.
